We are responsible for the conduct in Western Australia of:
State Elections & Referenda : This section contains information about State Elections and State Referenda in Western Australia. You can find information about candidates, polling places and results. For past elections you can also view a number of reports.
Local Government Postal Elections & Referenda : The Electoral Commissioner is responsible for the conduct of Local Government Postal Elections in Western Australia. Local Governments may also request that the Electoral Commissioner agree to conduct their in-person elections. Please read Local Government in Western Australia for further information. Local Governments use the First Past The Post voting system.

We also maintain the electoral roll for use in State and Local Government Elections. The State Electoral Roll
Lists persons entitled to vote at State elections for every State electoral district.
Lists persons entitled to vote at State elections for every State electoral district. Contains an elector's name, address, occupation and gender.
Enrolment
It is compulsory for every Australian citizen who has turned 18 years of age to enrol once they have lived in an electoral district in Western Australia for more than a month, and to re-enrol immediately following a change of address.
Electoral Enrolment Forms for first time enrolment or change of name and/or address are available on this website or from this Commission, Post Offices and Australian Electoral Commission offices.
Enrolled persons can apply for removal of their name & residential addresses from published rolls for personal safety reasons or under special circumstances.
State General Election
- Conducted every four years (widely advertised and promoted at election time).
- Voting is compulsory for all persons registered on the State Electoral Roll.
- Polling Places are selected to provide the best access for all members of the community.
- Mobile polling services are provided at some hospitals, gazetted special institutions and in remote areas.
- Applications can be made for an Early vote in certain circumstances. Early voting can be by post or in person.
Early vote (by post) application forms can be obtained from this website or from this Commission, Post Offices and Australian Electoral Commission offices.
Electors in remote areas or in certain special circumstances (eg. permanent disability) may apply to become a General Early Voter. Ballot papers are automatically posted to such electors.
Early voting in person is available at locations designated by the Commission. Typically these locations include this Commission, the Australian Electoral Commission offices in WA, Court Houses in WA, the offices of other State Electoral authorities and a number of overseas locations.
Non-Parliamentary Elections
Conduct of Local Government Biennial and Extraordinary postal elections, and voting in-person elections on request.
Conduct of Industrial (Union) and statutory elections.
Community Awareness
Is achieved through:
- Publication and distribution of a range of electoral reports, brochures and maps.
- Direct personal contact and consultation with members of the community.
- Election advertising and public relations campaigns.
- Specific education programs and presentations.

The following information is available for public inspection at the Commission at no charge:
- Election reports, district maps and general electoral information.
- Online computer access to a modified version of the State Electoral Roll.
- Voting entitlement brochures (also available in a selection of different languages).

Customer Service Standards
The Commission, as a public funded agency, will provide high quality services in response to the needs of the community:
Commission Staff will:
- Treat all customers with courtesy, respect and in a just and fair manner.
- Maintain the highest ethical standards of honesty and fairness.
- Provide customers with accurate, timely and impartial information and electoral advice.
- Ensure confidentiality of any personal information in dealings with customers.
- Ensure that customers with special needs are not disadvantaged in accessing Commission services (eg. Interpreter Service available for non-English speaking customers).
- Identify themselves and provide the easiest means by which they can be contacted again.
- Answer telephone calls quickly and will aim to transfer a caller no more than once to have a query answered.
- Return telephone messages within 1 working day.
- Promptly acknowledge and assist people attending the Commission's public counter.
- Develop and make available helpful strategic planning documents and brochures for customers wishing to access Commission services.
Improvements in Customer Service
The Commission has adopted strategies to use technology to improve services to customers in regard to electoral information, electoral roll maintenance and election procedures.
Service Excellence
Our Charter will be reviewed and updated regularly to ensure that we continue to meet our customers' needs.
Commission Facilities
Commission offices and all election facilities will be clearly signposted, including opening and closing times.
Access for people with special needs will be provided in Commission offices and election facilities where practical. In other cases, plans will be developed to ensure appropriate access in the future.
