1993 State General Election Details

Electoral Totem Pole as calculated by Antony Green ABC-TV

The percentage swing required for a seat to shift between the Coalition Parties (Liberal and National) and the Australian Labor Party, at the next State General Election based on 1993 Election Results and the revised boundaries resulting from the 1994 Division of the State.

As the electoral boundaries have changed since the 1993 State Election, as a result of the 1994 Division of the State into electoral regions and electoral districts, the swings have been estimated taking into account voting results for each polling place at the 1993 State General Election. These results include both the primary counts, and the two-candidates preferred counts.

Estimates for the new boundaries were made by examining the published maps of the new electorates. Where boundaries changed, it was necessary to move booths into a new electorate. Where a new boundary was very close to a booth, consideration was given to splitting a booth, initially 50:50 or 75:25 between the electorates.

Where booths were moved to new electorates, the number of 1993 votes transferred was compared to the number of electors transferred. A check was made to insure that the number of votes transferred correlated with the number of electors transferred. Declaration votes were distributed to new electorates in proportion to the number of electors transferred.

A judgement has been made to group the Independent seats for the Districts of Churchlands and South Perth with the Coalition. The Independent seat for the District of Kimberley has been grouped with the ALP as the member was formerly from the Australian Labor Party.
