Thursday 14 November 1996	Issue of Writs	A warrant was issued by His Excellency the Governor on Thursday, 14 November 1996. Writs were then issued by the Clerk of Writs for elections to be conducted in all electoral districts and regions in the state of Western Australia.
6.00 pm Friday 22 November 1996	Close of Rolls	8 days between issue of writ and close of roll.
6.00pm Friday 22 November 1996	Close of Nominations	Close of nominations and draw for ballot paper positions. Applications also close for authorisation for use of political party names and for formation of groups (Legislative Council only).
Monday 25 November 1996	Close of Ticket Applications	24 hours after close of nominations, close off time to lodge voting tickets (Legislative Council only).
Tuesday 26 November 1996	Oral Postal Voting Open	Oral postal vote ballot papers should be available for issue.
Thursday 28 November 1996	Written Postal Voting Open	Written postal vote ballot papers should be available for issue.
6.00pm Thursday 12 December 1996	Written Postal Voting Close	Applications for Written postal votes close at 6.00pm.
6.00pm Friday 13 December 1996	Oral Postal Voting Close	Applications for Oral postal votes close at 6.00pm.
Saturday 14 December 1996	POLLING DAY	Polling conducted between the hours of 8.00am and 6.00pm
9.00am Tuesday 17 December 1996	Close of Receipt of Postal Voting	Written postal vote ballot papers must be received by the Electoral Commission before 9.00am. Envelope must be postmarked before 6.00pm on polling day.
Friday 17 January 1997	Return of Writ - Legislative Assembly	Last day for the Returning Officers for the Electoral Districts to return the writ to the Clerk of the Writs.
Friday 24 January 1997	Return of Writ - Legislative Council	Last day for the Regional Returning Officers for the Electoral Regions to return the writ to the Clerk of the Writs.
