What Happens to Your Vote?

Counting at Polling Places

At 6.00pm sharp on polling day, all polling places close and polling officials open the ballot boxes and begin to sort and count the Legislative Assembly and Legislative Council votes.

The Tallyroom

The results are then sent immediately to the tallyroom, which becomes the focus of attention on Election Night. All polling place results are collated and the results for each district and region are published.

Television and Radio Election Results Reports

Television and radio commentators will report these results to you live from the tallyroom as they become available. The press will prepare reports including the latest election results for the Sunday and Monday editions of local, interstate and national newspapers.

Internet Information

In addition to providing a range of general Election information on this Internet site, the Commission will publish the progressive results as they become available on election night.

Declaration of Results

Final results for the Legislative Assembly will be available after the distribution of preferences is carried out by the Returning Officer and all absent, early and provisional votes have been counted. This is expected to be completed two weeks after polling day and will be published on this Internet site.

Generally, final results for the Legislative Council are available approximately three weeks after polling day.
